Area History

Boyne Island & Tannum Sands originally developed as two separate communities with Boyne Island being accessible only at low tide & Tannum Sands being a 20km roundabout drive.

In the early eighties a bridge was constructed joining the two communities, however each retained its separate name even though they share the same Post Office.

Locals quite often refer to the area or facilities in the area as "BITS", eg "BITS Club" short for Boyne Island Tannum Sands Country Club.

Kangaroos & Wallabies can still be found in the area & quite often overseas tourists get their first glimpse of these native animals in their natural environment. Free tours are arranged on request for guests staying at the motel.
.

There are a number of interesting walks in the area. One of these takes you past the Sacred Lotus Lily Pond to the grave of one of the early pioneers located in nearby bushland. Another meanders along the riverbank across the bridge then through dry rainforest to either the beach or the Canoe Point recreation & picnic area.
Alternatively, continue straight ahead under the bridge until you reach the boardwalk & Gazebo situated on one of the prettier reaches of the river.
